Bubbles anyone?

February 26th, 2009 alexylenov 3 comments

bubbleI have commissioned an airplane windshield manufacturer (who just happens to be a NASA/ESA contractor) to produce helmet bubbles for me. This has been a long time in the works. The molds are finished, and I should have a couple by then end of next week.

The molds where cast from my original vintage 1960′s helmet bubble. I hope to sell a few to recover my (rather large) investment.

The bubbles are cast from acrylic and should be indistinguishable from the version NASA uses. I will have entire helmets available soon, but if you want to build your own, or can’t wait contact me for pricing.

Lunar Overshoe

Moonboot Here is my first attempt at the Lunar Overshoe. This is the Right boot. The sole is cast from silicone rubber in a plaster mold I made. Its not perfect, but then its better than I had hoped.boot1boot2boot3boot4So now I will start on the mold for the left boot sole. And work on the metal bracket that holds the lower strap closed. I have Velcro there now.

Materials challenge

February 17th, 2009 alexylenov 1 comment

wri1 Here is the last attempt using current materials. I have come to the conclusion that the cotton inspection gloves I have been using as a substrate are too small. I think they are stretched when on the mold and relax when removed causing the latex to wrinkle. So I have ordered some XL size in hopes that will fix the problem.wrnkl2wrnkl4This glove actually looks “not that bad” in person. The flash really highlight the wrinkles and flaws. wrnkl5 So I’ll table this project untill the bigger gloves arrive.

Psst…hey buddy, want ta buy an Apollo prune glove?

That’s right, prune glove. Not Moon glove. The fingers wrinkled to an un-usable state when I removed the glove from the mold. The same thing happened to the first attempt. I had assumed that it needed to cure longer, so on this one (I’ll call it prototype 1A) I gave it twice the recommended time. Same thing. I noticed at Garber, that the molds the original gloves were made on are rubber. Perhaps the key to de-molding lies in flexible fingers on the mold or actually I think its called a plug. Any way, I am currently casting some rubber “plugs” for my next attempt.prunegloveprune2prune3prune4prune5prune6

Latest Comm Cap

February 13th, 2009 alexylenov 1 comment

Having located a source for Teflon coated fiberglass cloth, I ordered some that closely matched the CCM I had on loan. Here are some pictures of my humble (and hurried) attempt at reproducing it. I still have the cable in the back to fabricate and some painting of the exposed hardware parts to do. So here are the pictures:ccm1ccm2comm3comm4comm5
